Many Western Region members will have met Robin in their ballooning career. Robin went out for a run on the 30th January, something which he did regularly, and was found collapsed by a passer by. He did not survive. We know now that Robin had hypertrophic mycardiopathy - an almost undetectable heart muscle defect that sadly only manifests itself one way.
To say that it is a tragedy is an understatement, as Robin was only 39 years old. His death has profoundly shocked all those who met him and knew him. His enthusiasm and work in helping Bristol University maintain their status as the leading university hot air balloon club, as well as his friendly face being a feature of many balloon meets both in this country and abroad, are going to be sorely missed. Western Region send their greatest sympathies to Rowan, Robin's chief crew and wife.
On Thursday 7th of February 11 am, St Arilda's Church, Oldbury On Seven was packed, with numerous balloonists wanting to say their farewell. At the nearby pub in Oldbury "The Anchor" it was almost impossible to get in following the service due to the numbers of people wishing to have a drink in memory of Robin. Robin regularly rode his bike up that hill with Rowan many times.
Robin will undoubtedly have enjoyed the irony of the vehicle bringing his coffin to the church breaking down. Rowan was convinced it was Robin's wish he should be taken to the church in his balloon trailer and he was making his feelings known. After arrival it was even more fitting to see a beautiful wicker coffin designed very much like a balloon basket.
Both Tony Jay and Rowan gave tributes to Robin, and both were incredibly moving.
Robin was laid to rest in the church grounds. The weather on the day was absolutely still with birds singing. If you could not get to the service, do visit the church. The view is incredible and as the vicar said in the service "This is the right place, but this was the wrong time."
Those wishing to send cards to Rowan can do so to her address on the membership list on this website (have to log in as member).
